"In his paintings, Matthew Schofield embraces the experimentation of the amateur photographer as well as the photograph as a tactile object. Schofield's first solo exhibition at Nicholas Metivier Gallery is based on an unrelated family's archive of photographs that was gifted to him. Schofield accurately renders every detail of the photographs - their edges, descriptive writing, tears and fading - in paint, appropriating these images and constructing a new narrative for the viewer."
